I felt bad paging my ob last Friday afterno...Oh my. I felt bad paging my ob last Friday afternoon evening. However, my pcp told me to page him because I was so upset. Miscarried at 13 1/2 weeks on 2/21/08. Chemical Pregnancy 4/30/08. Now, thankfully pregnant again. Because of the MCs, my ob tested my hcg levels and progesterone. 11/12 dpo - 35 (6/10), 13/14 dpo - 65 (6/12), and 17/18 dpo - 284 (6/16). Increasing appropriately. HOWEVER, my progesterone was only 6.8. Very low. I TRIED talking with the nurse about supplementation and she cut me off and said my ob did not believe in it and she was NOT going to argue with him. I became so upset at the thought of possibly losing another baby (was on progesterone for 2 years before I stopped when I got pregnant with the 13 1/2 week mc). I was hysterical. Tried to catch my ob at the end of the day when I picked up the HCG lab slip, only to find the office had closed early.

Called my pcp hysterical and BEGGED her to prescribe it. She wouldn't because she didn't want to step on toes and he just delivered her baby. But they said it sounded like the nurse didn't even discuss it with him. For me to page him because I was so upset. So I did.

He said 50% of ob docs believe in it, 50% don't. He thinks it is garbage. I said I don't care, I want on it and my baby deserves a chance. He immediately ordered it and even found a pharmacy to make it for me on a Friday night (compounded prometrium suppository). He agreed to retest my levels and increase if needed.

Talked with nurse who knows my history to get my numbers on Tuesday and mentioned the progesterone getting tested again. She said that I should have called the office so that it could have been charted (nothing in chart about me on progesterone now, but ob has been off). I told her I did and explained what happened! She said they order it all the time for ob patients with low progesterone and why test if you are not treating it. She demanded to know who was the nurse that told me no to supplementation. I told her. So hopefully that won't happen again. The only reason I didn't wait till the next business day was because it would have been today before he saw it. I wanted on it THAT NIGHT.

I will say that I hated paging him and felt really bad. However, he has never seen/heard me hysterical like that before. I must have said something because it took him half an hour to hunt down a pharmacy (not sure why he didn't order oral prometrium to be used vaginally). He didn't sound mad at all when he called me back to tell me where he ordered it and said for me to please take it easy and it was ok.

Oh and when I was pregnant with my daughter and had severe PIH, I wouldn't call him at home either. He said ummm, YOU are one of the ones I want to hear from. You are not calling me about something stupid. I have had him paged a total of 3 or 4 times in 4 1/2 years. That was 1 pregnancy with my daughter and this one.

All of this could have been avoided if the nurse had told him I was insistent on being on it instead of blowing me off.

Do you guys ever say anything to the patient when they come into the office about appropriate phone usage when they abuse it???A Lupie Mommahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06618715500094103713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31146535.post-35866252829882826512008-06-12T09:29:00.000-04:002008-06-12T09:29:00.000-04:00Oh my gosh, this is hilarious, my friend. I had to make the decision years ago not to go back to medical school and to pursue my dream of being a OB/Gyn. I am a mother of three and work two nights during the weekend so that I can be there for my kids during the week. I admire what you do, being a mom and a doctor. I love my job now and really love the interaction I have between the patients. Keep the funny stories coming...I love hearing a doctor side of it. It makes you guys seem real to us. I am really close to some of the MDs I work with and I have to think about how they are real people and mothers.
